Earlier this afternoon, a helicopter crashed on the rooftop of a 54-story building in Midtown Manhattan; which is located in the same restricted area as Trump Tower.

Officials are not saying whether the area is restricted due to the Trump Tower building or other circumstances.

New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill told the press that the pilot is the only fatality. The pilot has been identified but the officials are waiting to notify family members before they release the pilot’s name to the public.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that although it’s “very unusual” for the pilot to have flown in the area, he (Bill de Blasio) does not believe this was an act of terror.

The mayor also noted that the pilot would need clearing from La Guardia airport in order to have travelled in the area. No officials from La Guardia airport have said whether they gave the pilot permission to fly in the area.

The city, state, and federal officials are working together to determine what caused the fatal crash.
