FOX News' ol' timers aren't going anywhere
FOX News’ Bill O’Reilly, Greata Van Susteren, and Sean Hannity (ol’ timers) aren’t going anywhere because they don’t have anywhere to go.
They are in a business whereby age and looks are everything. Just look around at the various news networks.
There a person will see more young folks than old folks reporting on the news and giving their opinions about the news.
O’Reilly, Van Susteren, and Hannity are in their 60s. And the chances of a news organization given a new contract to a man or a woman in his/her 60s are slim to none.
The ol’ timers know this and it is why they’re acting out. The three ol’ timers threaten to leave their good paying jobs if their friend, FOX News CEO Roger Ailes, left the company.
Ailes, who resigned before the August 1, 2016, deadline, got himself in some hot water after several women alleged that the former CEO offered to advance their careers if they gave him some “special time.”
One of those women, Gretchen Carlson, is suing Ailes for sexual harassment. Carlson and the other women claims were given a good dose of credibility after it was reported that Megyn Kelly , host of the Kelly File, had similar experiences with Ailes.
The report about Kelly led to O’Reilly, Van Susteren, and Hannity throwing temper tantrums and promising to leave FOX News if Ailes was forced out.
As childish as their behaviors were, it is understandable. Kelly has taken away the ol’ timers’ shine.
In 2013 when she was 39-years-old, Kelly skyrocketed to fame after getting her own show and knocking Van Susteren out of her 9PM prime time slot.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Van Susteren, who was 59-years-old during that time, was so mad about her “demotion” that she was thinking about going to FOX News’ arch nemesis, CNN.
Van Susteren could not get her freedom papers, however, because she was stuck in a contract.
Plus, CNN was not going to spend considerable amount of money on Van Susteren when CNN was trying to restructure and rebuild the organization with younger faces.
Like Van Susteren, O’Reilly and Hannity are the something old. They don’t have what Kelly has, which is youth and time.
Both men ages and their views are in the 60s. Kelly, who sometimes has out dated views as well, is appealing to the young folks and the middle age old folks.
According to Ed Pilkington of The Guardian, Kelly has surpassed O’Reilly with the all so important 25-54-years-old demographic group.
Gabriel Sherman of The New York Magazine reported that Kelly is viewed “as the future of the network,” whereas O’Reilly, Van Susteren, and Hannity are yesterday’s news.
In the media business, being yesterday’s news is not good news. And like anyone who doesn’t want to go gently into that not so good night, the ol’ timers staged a revolt that ultimately ended with them being on the losing end.
